8 Million iPhone Sold by UK-Based Jeweler.



April 3 (Bloomberg) -- Apple Inc. has gained unlikely allies in its bid to boost iPhone sales: Russian smugglers.

The device isn't sold by Cupertino, California-based Apple in Russia and it can't be used legally on local networks. Still, about 250,000 people own one, more than any other country except the U.S. and China, according to Eldar Murtazin, chief analyst at Moscow-based Mobile Research Group.

That popularity has turned into a bonanza for traders who sell the phones in kiosks and on the Internet for $1,000 each, more than twice the U.S. price. Hackers say they charge as much as 2,500 rubles ($105) to ``unlock'' them so they work locally.

Gay Robot was originally a comedy bit on Adam Sandler's fifth album, Shh...Don't Tell . In the sketch, a group of friends are watching football when the neighbor calls to let them know that his invention, Gay Robot, is coming over. Gay Robot is very good with football statistics and is very horny because he does not know any other gay guys. The sketch consists of Gay Robot constantly trying to entice the others into homosexual acts with him. In 2006, Comedy Central filmed a pilot for a TV show based on the comedy bit, which has never aired. The robot, voiced by Nick Swardson, discovers he is gay after a wine cooler is spilled on him and fries his circuit board. The show is a Happy Madison production.
